Film Director Darren Aronofsky, dual SFS alum (Kenya \u201985 and Alaska \u201986), started The Fountain Scholarship with the monetary award he won for his film The Fountain.<\/em><\/strong> This scholarship provides tuition assistance to those SFS applicants who (a) have spent most of their lives in an urban environment whether in the US or abroad; (b) demonstrate financial need; and (c) demonstrate a commitment to and concern for environmental issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An award-winning director, Darren\u2019s recent film, The Whale<\/em><\/strong>, is a moving, redemptive film receiving widespread praise and attention. Darren also produced, The Territory<\/em><\/strong>, a Nat Geo documentary examining the conflict between an indigenous community and deforestation in the Amazonian rainforest of Brazil. He also directed, Black Swan<\/em><\/strong>, which won Natalie Portman the Academy Award for Best Actress and received four other nominations including one for Best Picture. Darren both wrote and directed The Fountain<\/em><\/strong>, which one reviewer suggested \u201cmay well restore your faith in the idea that a movie can take you out of the mundane and into a place of wonderment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In appreciation for his time with SFS in places of wonderment, Darren established this endowed scholarship for the benefit of students who have grown up in urban environments, demonstrate financial need, and have a commitment and concern for environmental issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
