requesting references

Students occasionally seek references from SFS faculty or staff for graduate programs, fellowships, or job applications. Because instructors often balance heavy teaching and research commitments, sometimes while in the field, responses may take time, so reach out well in advance of any deadlines.

When making your request, share helpful materials such as your resume, a brief description of the opportunity, deadlines, and a few bullet points about what you’d like them to highlight. Faculty are not obligated to provide a reference, and their ability to do so will depend on their workload and your performance at SFS, so be sure to confirm that they feel comfortable writing on your behalf. Keep track of your faculty and Center Director contact information, express appreciation for their time, and follow up as needed. If you need help connecting with a professor, contact [email protected].
